To me the best of Stephen King’s novels: 11/22/63

What book are you reading right now?

There are few contemporary novels I have read more than once, but I find myself deep in a third reading of Stephen King’s JFK assassination thriller. In part, I found it fascinating getting inside the life of the alleged killer, at least fictionally, but the real attraction for me is the detailed retelling of life in America before we lost our innocence on that horrific day.

After that came Viet Nam, the spread of the drug culture into the fabric of American life, the erosion of the family, Watergate, the Iran hostages, Nicaragua, 9/11, Ben Ghazi, Afghanistan and gender disintegration on a global scale. And that’s far from an exhaustive list.

I also recommend the Hulu miniseries King executive produced from his novel.

It was sixty years ago next week that the world changed forever.
